Haiti
Outreach Ministries (HOM)
is a Christian ministry principally to the people of Port au Prince, Haiti through the Christian Churches (L’Eglise
Chretien) at Cite Soleil, Terre Noire (Blanchard) and Repatriote. The ministry also includes the village of Ibo Beach (Source Matelas), about 25km northwest of Port au Prince on the bay. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with high unemployment, low per capita income, no system of public education (80% of the students rely on organizations such as HOM for their education), no public health system, and poor infrastructure (no electrical grid or water distribution system, poor roads, etc.).
Hundreds of thousands of Haitians have migrated to the Port au Prince area in search of work or education. The people’s greatest unmet need is spiritual, and the Gospel provides a foundation for their lives and hope for their future. The ministry has a parallel effort to provide affordable medical care, nutrition, leadership training and vocational training. HOM seeks to take up the challenge of Jesus to help those in need.

Cite Soleil is a poor residential area near the Port au Prince airport and, historically, is home to about 300,000 people within its 2 square miles. Its population has fluctuated since 2004 due to civil unrest. Unemployment exceeds 50%, in part due to the lingering effects of the economic sanctions imposed on Haiti during the years of military rule and, in part, due to the impact of the post 2003 civil unrest on the economy. |
Terre Noire (Blanchard) is a newer residential neighborhood where many of Cite Soleil’s former residents have gone when they have saved enough to move out of the
slum. It is growing rapidly and is expected to build out to about 250,000 within the next 5 years.

Repatriote is a new development close to Port au Prince and is intended to house many of the Haitians returning from the Dominican Republic, as well as many of those fleeing the slums. HOM
opened a church here in August 2006. A school is planned.

Source Matelas (Ibo Beach) is a rural village on the bay in the arid area about 25 km northwest of Port au Prince.
The new church/school building is complete, with outfitting and school room partitions remaining to be accomplished.

Since January 2004 there has been
increased political and criminal violence which has severely
impacted the residents
of Cite Soleil, in particular. Many have left the area
– either to return to their families in the
countryside or to stay with friends or relatives nearby. Through
this period of turmoil, the ministry of the Gospel remained a
beacon to the people. With the decline in violence in
early 2005, daily activities in Cite Soleil began to return to normal
for the residents. Conditions dramatically improved in early 2007 and
we are now able to fully function in Cite Soleil. HOM is
committed to the ministry in Cite Soleil, as well as those areas
where former residents of Cite Soleil (and other similar areas)
are relocating. |
